Movie seen: Transformers

I've read some negative stuff about this movie, but Mark and I *loved* it. It wasn't the most elegantly put together movie -- I count no fewer than three plot digressions that were utterly and completely unnecessary (well, except that one of them gave Anthony Anderson an excuse to be in the movie) -- but it was fun and funny, and the special effects were seamless enough that I was wowed by the action rather than the effect.

The only significant flaw, surprisingly, was John Turturro's performance. I usually really like him, but in Transformers he's not making the same movie as everyone else: He's camping it up, while the rest of the cast is playing it straight. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of comedy -- TONS of comedy -- but everyone takes the basic premise seriously, and I think it's that overall earnest quality that makes the movie so appealing (at least to me).

Shia LaBeouf is dorkily cute (kinda like Justin Long is in Die Hard, with both of them the direct descendants of John Cusack's Lloyd Dobler in Say Anything), and Josh Duhamel does his best Timothy Olyphant (and I mean that in a good way!), and the Transformers are more affecting than you might think giant robots would be (or maybe not, if you've ever seen Iron Giant), and the product placement from GM is not as intrusive as it could be (although RM just raised his eyebrow at me, because it's Mighty Darn Intrusive).
