Wow. Just -- wow. I really loved this movie. Ryan Reynolds (whom I loved already from Blade III and other things) is *wonderful*. Not enough exposed torso, but still -- wonderful.

It's a weird movie, because it's all shoot-em-up, action-y, but then also talky (funny talky) -- a lot like early Tarantino stuff, like Reservoir Dogs and True Romance (which was actually Roger Avery, I think, but still part of that whole whatever (school? scene? movement? posse?)). But then it has all this real sincere emotion in it, too (kinda slashy emotion, actually), which sometimes those movie are too ironic to have.

So, anyway: It start reasonably slowly -- the stage must be set, and a fuckin' ENORMOUS cast of characters must be introduced -- but the pacing is great, it builds steadily to just a FRENZY of bullets and knives and CHAINSAWS.

If you faint at the sight of blood? This is not a movie for you. There are some very, VERY rough (but mercifully brief) scenes. But mostly I think they are necessary, because they really do serve to let you know who you're dealing with and what the stakes are.

There's a twist, kinda (not a well-concealed one, IMHO, but I don't feel like that hurt the movie in any substantive way). And there's this crazy shell game with elevators that has reminds me of, I don't know, Noises Off -- it's weird, slapsticky farce. (And in the middle of it all, for no discernible reason, there's this hyperactive child of dubious parentage who wants to be the Karate Kid.)

I am still riding on adrenaline from this movie, and I suspect this scattershot description has scared you all off by now, but I actually recommend it -- it was all that I expected, but also a lot more.

It also has a truly insane cast. I was going to try and list the highlights here, but it's really out of control -- just read the list on imdb.

(Like Jason Bateman! I almost forgot about him -- he's only in it for a couple minutes, but he's so very funny.)
