CON.TXT is over, and I am DED. Oh, I might look alive -- sitting upright, and blinking my eyes, and breathing and all that -- but that's just clever use of caffeine and a hairbrush. Really, I am dead.
We stumbled a couple times -- it was our first con, stumbling was inevitable -- but to push the metaphor a bit, I think (hope) we managed to regain our balance before we went splat. Is it tacky for me to talk about what I really liked? (It's not something I had anything to do with, so I'm not being as immodest as it might seem.) What the heck: My favorite part of the con, hands down, was Disco Duck.
gblvr put together a playlist of dance music with a fannish slideshow to accompany it. I expected to enjoy the music -- her taste overlaps with mine a lot -- and thought the slideshow might add atmosphere. The music was every bit as good as I expected, and the slideshow was PHENOMENAL.
Two screens displayed 370 striking images of incredibly sexy people across a wide range of fandoms: Michael Biehn, shirtless, from The Terminator; Hugh Jackman playing golf wearing nothing but a yellow towel; Salma Hayek wearing a column of silver sequins; Ewan McGregor, shirtless, laughing; Bodie and Doyle smiling with their arms around each other; Fraser and Kowalski standing nose to nose. Every couple minutes a particularly nice image would inspire a little burst of applause or cheers, and someone invented a game where you'd watch the two slides come up and assess the pairing: So, Matthew McConaughey half-naked on the beach vs. a coyly grinning Sean Maher = YES! (OMG *YES*), while Bodie & Doyle vs. Snape & Malfoy = oh, I don't think that would work very well.
It was like Reese's cups, like chocolate and peanut butter: Standing on a dance floor dancing to song after song that I loved (so many '80s favorites, like Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order and Ask by the Smiths, plus newer songs like Rihanna's SOS) and, AT THE SAME TIME, drooling over the pretty, pretty people with my fannish peeps. Fangirl heaven, I'm telling you.
I also loved the vid show, but I did actually help with that a teensy bit, so I won't say anything more about that, other than to note that the unbelievably meticulous
justacat has already put the whole playlist, with links to vidders, online here.
And I am already starting to think about how to make the next CON.TXT better (please comment if you have any suggestions!), and I am so very, very grateful that Connexions will be back in 2007 so that the next CON.TXT won't be until 2008.
