God save me from pretentious rock stars
Dec. 18th, 2005 11:54 pmSomehow RoboMark and I start talking about early goth bands -- Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, etc. -- and I'm trying to remember if Peter Murphy was in any other band but Bauhaus, so I google the guy, and the top link is his offical site http://www.petermurphy.info. Once I skip the intro, there's a link labeled "just who is he." I click on it, and instead of a nice, chronological description of his career, I find a paragraph explaining the page contains "various impressions" others have had of Peter Murphy.
From left to right, the first link says "Tim Thurston." I click on it (and remember, all I really need to know is if PM was in any other bands), and find ... a *poem*.
So I click on the second link, labeled "Greg Fasolino," which takes me to an essay that begins, "Like jewels plucked from a familiar setting, only to be prominently displayed in a fresh configuration, these 16 songs are heard anew, their erudite glint a shifting set of sonic prisms evoking new responses from the listener, casting new reflections and effortlessly transcending their year of creation." 0 for 2
Link #3, "Paul Morley," reveals this: "I know very little about Peter Murphy.I know his name, and I know the shape of his head, because itÌs a shape IÌve always been very jealous of. I think anyone with a head shaped like that, all kind of sharp and hollow and almost sinister, must have something of the magical about him." I'll give Morley points for using more one-syllable words in one sentence than the entire rest of the site, but still: I have no idea whether or not Murphy was in any other bands. 0 for 3.
At least there's Wikipedia ...
So, I am feeling lame for 1) not having posted in three weeks and 2) not posting much fannish content at all. But I can't really promise that will change anytime soon, as the holidays are kicking my ass (in the best possible way).
