I made one tiny New Year's resolution: start getting to work on time. See, I'm one of those people who, if everything is just right, slides in 5 or 10 minutes late EVERY DAY. If everything isn't just right -- if I have to wash my hair, or I find a hole in my tights, or something's going on with the trains -- then I'm a solid 15-20 minutes late. And no one's said anything, and it hasn't caused any problems, but I just thought it needed to change.

So this morning was my first work day of the new year, and I was so good, and set my alarm early, and didn't abuse the snooze button, and got out of the house on time ... and they were single-tracking trains, and I was 10-15 minutes late. Argh.

Had a great holiday! Wednesday night (NYE), I went to (sorta helped throw) a party. The guests were a good, interesting mix of people I've seen at several parties and people I'd never met, and at midnight we lowered a disco ball! Thursday was mellow, Friday was a really fun, raucous-but-friendly meeting of my book group, and Saturday night my brother, my cousin, and his fiancee all came over for dinner. And Sunday I got up earlier than I'm accustomed to and met K down on the mall for a run -- so by the time I usually get out of bed, I'd already accomplished a lot -- and then CGU and I went to visit our friends K & T and meet their week-old baby! That was very fun, but also freaky because CGU and I are thinking we'll start working on that as soon as we're legal, so seeing teeny babies it's like, yipes, that could be *ours*.

Return of the King
No spoilers, just *wow*, this was a damn fine movie. And I'm working on a crackpot theory that Tolkien was actually advocating we oppose totalitarianism with something other than capitalism. OK, that's probably not what he was writing about, but Sauron's eye? Very totalitarian (and also made me think of Foucault, but not in a useful way). And the "men of the West" need to fight him, but they must be careful not to be seduced by the power of the gold ring. You see how I'm getting these ideas??

Paycheck
... was another puzzle movie I liked. The pacing was just right, and everyone in it was solid (if not brilliant) except for Paul Giamatti, who I thought was *great*. Uma's character kicked some ass, which is something I always like in a female lead.
