I started the day playing Katy Perry chases Elmo with the BG. For those who care/don't know: Katy Perry joined the ranks of Neil Patrick Harris, Johnny Cash, and the Spin Doctors by filming a video with Elmo. However, the cleavage on display in the video caused a stir. I can see why people were taken aback -- it's kinda boobalicious for Sesame Street. OTOH, toddlers don't have the same relationship with boobs that adults do. Cleavage doesn't make them think of s*x, it makes them think of *food*. So anyhow, I made the mistake of watching the video with the BG in the room, and she's a HUGE Elmo fan, so now she wants to watch it a couple times a day. This morning we ran across a dress-up headband/veil someone gave her, vaguely resembling the one in the video, and she put it on and told me to be Elmo and run away, and then directed me to wear it and chase her around. Things I never thought I'd do ...

For those who are ready to move past turducken: Turbacon. It's a bird inside a bird inside a bird inside a bird inside a bird inside a pig. With bacon. And butter. And Dr. Pepper.

The news that Prince William and Kate Middleton plan to include commoners among their wedding guests naturally made me think of Pulp's Common People (link goes to the sublime Shatner cover).

Amazingly enough, I have seen two movies in as many weeks (in the theater, even!): Unstoppable and Red. The former was seriously suspenseful -- a real nail-biter -- the more so because all the perils were utterly realistic. The latter was more of a romance than I expected (not that I minded). Malkovich stole the show, and it's always nice to see the improbably lean Karl Urban.

After five years reading almost nothing but SGA (and before that six reading almost nothing but Due South), I appear to have moved on to Sherlock BBC. I think it's interesting that fanon!Sherlock is almost always a few (or more than a few) degrees less sane than canon!Sherlock. (It reminds me of how fanon!John Sheppard is almost always more of a genius than canon!John Sheppard.)

Here's the thing: There are a lot of people who could qualify for Mensa -- 6 million in the US alone; there were probably a half-dozen -- maybe more -- at the last CON.TXT, and they can't *all* solve Millennium Problems on the back of a napkin or get a PhD in math in their spare time. And that thing he did calculating 720 possibilities? That's a factorial, and you've forgotten that you learned how to do that back in elementary school. Remembering 6th-grade math does not make one a genius.

Anyhow, despite my personal conviction that Sherlock is actually relatively sane, I am ridiculously fond of [identity profile] wordstrings.livejournal.com's Paradox Series.

And despite the fact that I am pretty much a monofan, I also really enjoyed [profile] dirasudis' Vorkosigan-verse series, The World That You Need

Finally, I am not much of a grace-saying person, but I -am- a science-fiction-movie-loving person, and I very much appreciated John Scalzi's science-fiction Thanksgiving grace.

Thanks for the link to the Thanksgiving grace!

Also, I agree that Sherlock in the Paradox series is … well beyond stable, but it is an interesting series. Have you read these less insane stories?

Oooh, links. I like reading things, but am usually wary to wander out into the fray on my own. *starts with your links*
