Reviewing an article about the future of vaccines and the possibility that 50 years from now genetic illnesses could be eliminated in utero, and stopping myself, pen poised on the paper, before I write, "Oh yeah, like in this story I read last night where the Firefly crew realizes Dean Winchester really *is* from the past because he has a recessive gene for cystic fibrosis!"

Also, Kelly-o came up with a really fun meme -- pick your top 10 songs ever -- except that I am WAY too OCD for that. I couldn't just think of 10 songs, I had to go through iTunes (and come up with a list of 25), and then go through all my CDs, and when I finally winnowed it down I had FIVE times as many songs as she's looking for. I don't regret it, though, because looking for the videos on YouTube was totally fun.

Also, practically none of these songs are more recent than the mid-90s. I think it takes me about 10 years to decide whether a song truly belongs on a list of classics or not.

So: Molly-o's

Top 10 25 52 songs EVAR!!1!1
(In alphabetical order, because did I mention the OCD?)

12XU/Wire
I like this version a lot better than Minor Threat's cover -- even if the only video I can find is some soccer match.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DEe8EORMiY

ABC/Jackson 5
Man, it is sad to look at that video and think of the King of Pop today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IafScvFdArQ

American Pie/Don McLean
What? It's American Pie. It *had* to be on here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHkT2YfqHE4

Baby's on Fire/Brian Eno
This version is actually a pretty faithful cover from the soundtrack to "Velvet Goldmine." The video is pretty scorching (not to mention NSFW).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXVzR6C7K94

Blister in the Sun/Violent Femmes
I would be sad that it's in a Burger King ad, except that I get to hear it more often.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWR3r5_mCmU

Blue Monday/New Order
I *almost* picked Bizarre Love Triangle, but I love the stark thump-thump-thump opening of this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts9r0QHuFHw

Bohemian Rhapsody/Queen
Here's the original video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irp8CNj9qBI
Here's the version from Freddie Mercury's memorial concert, with Sir Elton John and Axl Rose (wearing a black leather kilt!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ahn3-0mYBuc
Go ahead and bang your head like they do in Wayne's World, I won't tell anyone.

Bring on the Night/Police
I prefer the album version to this live one, but I don't think they made a video to this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sLPbFnldRw

Build Me Up Buttercup/Foundations
I like the original by the Foundations, but no way could I resist Kevin Smith's video to the Goops' cover.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as8mFBSa4Zg

Corcovado/Stan Getz & Astrud & Joao Gilberto
The Girl From Ipanema is a more well known example of bossa nova, I think, but the mournful quality of Corcovado really works for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSgvvbCQq9c

Could you be loved/Bob Marley
How hard is it to choose one Bob Marley song?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXk7VCsFnvc

Don't Stop Believin'/Journey
It's the cheesiest of cheese, but it's, like, SO cheesey that it's transcendent. And I went hunting for this video -- which isn't on YouTube -- because it's a better accompaniment than anything the band could've come up with.
http://www.theadversary.com/swf/dontstopbelievin.swf

Dry the Rain/Beta Band
This might be the only thing on here from the 21st century. Turns out it's from 1998.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxBpg4w5t_c

Fuck and Run/Liz Phair
I first heard this song in the changing room of a thrift store. At the time, and for several years thereafter, it was a sadly apt description of my personal life.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY7BHOWs35M&mode=related&search=

Gigantic/Pixies
Frank Black is pretty much an ass, but he didn’t write this song, Kim Deal did, and I know that galls him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK0CJqMK6f0

Girl u Want/Superchunk
Off the Freedom of Choice compilation, and I couldn't find it anywhere, so you'll have to settle for the original version, by Devo. But trust me, the Superchunk version is MUCH better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjuKss9hPYI

Go!/Tones on Tail
Sadly, the only video I could find for this is two dorks dancing in their underwear. It's a great osng, though,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp0mZSZW7sc

Got to be Real/Cheryl Lynn
I can't believe I'm typing this, but this song actually made me come. I mean, other things were going on at the time that helped, but the orgasm? Was due to the song. The guy could tell, too. That might be why we didn't last.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoXvDleWJ5U

Got to Give It Up-Pt. 1/Marvin Gaye
I love these '70s performance videos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUW5_FNr6VI

Great Gig in the Sky/pink floyd
I almost put wish you were here -- luckily this clip has both!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsFy938tjw8

How Soon Is Now/Smiths
There's a club if you'd like to go/you could meet somebody who really loves you.
So you go, and you stand on your own/and you leave on your own
and you go home, and you cry/and you want to die.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2NrIALcNOw

I Can't Make You Love Me/Bonnie Raitt
There area number of versions of this song, but I like Bonnie Raitt's the best.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlrXIvMmG3s
But I have to admit, George Michael's version is a hilarious choice for a Spike/Buffy songvid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzYkeAdsEMg

I Feel the Earth Move/Carole King
The live versions I could find on YouTube kinda sucked, but this 10-year-old does a surprisingly effective cover at her school talent show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lq1Y_FJMYj8

I Got You /split enz
Early '80s videos were really adorable.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xv6oOxn1axw

I'll Take You There/Staple Singers
I think of this as a gospel song (a funky, sexy gospel song, but gospel nonetheless), so it's very weird to see people dancing to it on Soul Train.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAuL7aTeoIQ

I Wanna Be Your Dog/Iggy Pop
I love this song, it's the only song that's ever made me want to learn to play the guitar And this video made me laugh so very hard.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0pGDtoy8Lc

I Want You to Want Me/Cheap Trick
Live at Budokan!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sCOf6MsH0o

Jet Boy Jet Girl/The Damned
In case you didn't know what this song is about, Dave Vanian will explain it for you in no uncertain times. NSFW.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXXPaEjCOus

Lady Marmalade/Labelle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQEgN4yVZ5A

Leader of the Pack/Shangri-Las
I was so pleased to actually find video of the Shangri-La's lip-synching this song -- and then Robert Goulet came out on the motorcycle! I can't decide if he makes the video or ruins it. I*love* this song, though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R84MGayvkU

Little Red Corvette/Prince
There's no video of LRC -- what's up with that? This is a cheesy skateboarding video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxkQ5PB-Vos

Mirror in the Bathroom/English Beat
Isn't this video great -- really inventive?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JoEhgUXxKg

Movin' Out/Billy Joel
Glass Houses was the beginning of the end, but I still have a soft spot for the early, classic Billy Joel.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pts3ng9bJ8

Never Say Never/Romeo Void
This will always make me think of Aidan Quinn on a motorcycle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCzKLodGEKY

Once in a Lifetime/Talking Heads
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYbUCvz1LYE

September/Earth Wind & Fire
This is the first 45 I ever bought
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfLEc09tTjI

Sir Duke/Stevie Wonder
I found a really, really awful karaoke version. The best part is, he's singing from a *rocking chair*. (The worst part is his explanation for why it isn't copyright infringment.): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ALVoezuS1w
Here's Stevie Wonder doing it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaoYu6jOoug

Stand and Deliver/Adam Ant
No one -- not the hair-band boys, not johnny-come-latelies like Pete Wentz or the Madden twins -- can rock eyeshadow and lip gloss like Adam Ant. That part when he sings "All mine" with a flirty grin? That gets me EVERY time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPgHbt0ODr4

Stoned Soul Picnic/The Fifth Dimension
No video, but the scenery is pretty.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOAOIka7y_c

Stop in the name of love/Supremes
Introduced by Tony Randall!! You can already tell Diana's a diva.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDPjYZxi0n8
And check out Mrs. Buergers at Van Wyck jr. high school:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7mUU8IYE_A

Sunday bloody Sunday/u2
You can keep those later anthems like Pride -- this will always be my favorite u2 song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaP5qw2o7TU

Superfreak/Rick James
RIP, Rick.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75qXUfp4wtw

Sweet baby James/James Taylor
James Taylor is like eighth grade: It was an awkward year, and you like to pretend it never happened -- except if you hadn't gone through that, you wouldn't be who you are now, so you can't disavow it. And y'know, this is a pretty decent lullabye.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGwUA57Empo

Tainted Love/Soft Cell
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRxI22zuLFs

Tell Me Something Good/Rufus + Chaka Khan
I actually saw Chaka perform this life with the Air Force band. It was amazing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhYfERg4dPk

Thank you falettin' me be mice elf agin/Sly and the Family Stone
This is a classic song that is somehow more obscure than I think it ought to be,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJRNtBqHCyc

These Boots Are Made for Walkin'/Nancy Sinatra
I almost picked the Jessica Simpson version, but I couldn't do that to people I like.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ECyTGZjOJc

Train in Vain/The Clash
Hell hath no fury like an art-student-turned-punk-rocker scorned.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYK7bEo1Z4M&mode=related&search=

Turning Japanese/Vapors
This isn't so different from the amateur videos on You Tube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAPpGO19ZBA

Waterloo/Abba
It's a video of the Eurovision contest!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjt7eU88xUA

When the Levee Breaks/Led Zeppelin
Someone put together a collage of New Orleans images to this song. It seemed trite until I found myself tearing up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_Ny9_CrUVY

You Shook Me All Night Long/ACDC
You don't know how tempted I was to use the Celine Dion video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XKuxxZ2JCI (in alphabetical order, because did I mention the OCD?)
