long and rambly ...
Sep. 8th, 2006 09:56 pmI feel that I should post a Star Trek memory, but I don't actually *have* any Star Trek memories. Star Trek for me is like the first time I flew on a plane -- I can't even remember my first flight, I was an infant, air travel was always something I'd always done. Likewise, I can't remember my first Star Trek episode; I can't remember a time when I hadn't seen that crazy serpent with the glowing eyes that was worshipped by the people with blond bouffant wigs; I can't remember a time when I didn't know "the world is hollow, and I have touched the sky"; I can't remember a time when I wasn't creeped out by those invasive flapjacks that latched onto Spock's back.
When I was in grad school in American Studies, we were sitting around picking apart the idea of "canon" (in the English lit sense, not the fanfic sense), and somebody suggested Moby Dick was part of the American literary canon NOT because everyone has read it, but because you don't HAVE to actually read it to know about Ahab and the white whale and "Call me Ishmael." By that standard, Star Trek has been part of the American television canon practically since that first broadcast in 1966. Red shirts, "Beam me up, Scotty," and that immortal split infinitive, "to boldly go" -- is there anyone who doesn't know these things?
Other, unrelated things:
1) I *love*
sgastoryfinders. I don't know if I'll ever take advantage of it, but just reading the fic descriptions (almost all stories that I've read and loved) is satisfying.
2)
cleolinda recced www.madametalbots.com, and if you like vampires/day of the dead figures/wacky vintage things, it is indeed spiffy.
Also, at RM's behest, I am posting about how he listens to Everyone But Me. By which I mean,
1) I've known about Wikipedia FOREVER -- not as long as I've known about Star Trek or plane flight, maybe, but at least since our wedding in 2004. I *know* that I've mentioned Wikipedia to him and used it to look up things he was curious about. And then a few months ago he's like, "I've discovered this AWESOME website, Wikipedia!" Or then,
2) I've been telling him for two or three years that there's this SF con in Atlanta every fall and they have a ton of guests and the Cruxshadows play there, and he's always like yeah, whatever, and then a month or so ago he calls me at work all excited and says, "Hey, did you know there's this cool con called Dragoncon in Atlanta?" And then,
3) We are in Atlantic City this weekend, because we both had Friday off, and a friend of mine is getting married in Wilmington, so I suggested we make a weekend of it on the Jersey shore, and I said, "What about Cape May?" and did a Google image search and showed him pictures of Cape May, but he was very dubious and pushed for Atlantic City, so I went ahead and made reservations, and then a couple weeks ago he came home and asked me why we weren't staying in Cape May, "it's supposed to be a lot nicer than Atlantic City."
Speaking of RM, when I asked what he thinks of when he thinks about Star Trek, he said "Sex with alien chicks," for whatever that's worth.
