RM and I just saw The Matador, and it was *great*. Pierce Brosnan is SO GOOD -- the role plays off his Bond image, but that's not all there is to it, not by a long shot. I thought it might be similar to the role he played in Tailor of Panama (which also worked the Bond thing), but it's not, it's its own thing, and it's EXCELLENT.

There were so many scenes that opened with a closeup of PB, and everyone in the theater would almost immediately start laughing. He didn't even SAY anything, he just, I don't know, sipped his drink, and we all cracked up, because every gesture said SO much. And then when he did speak, his lines were just fantastic: "I look like a Bangkok hooker on a Sunday morning, after the Navy's left town," is just one thing he says, only ALL his lines are like that. You can see Greg Kinnear's character trying to decide whether to stop and say, "What the fuck?" or just ignore these outrageous things and keep going -- and he *does* stop and say WTF a few times, and then he just gives up. And as much as I could go on and on about how great PB is, Greg Kinnear is just as wonderful -- maybe more so, because his character is a more subtle one -- and so is Hope Davis.

There's an unbelievable gay subtext -- you can't even call it subtext, PB's pretty blatantly ready to fuck anything pretty. ("You'd like Manila, all the boys look like girls, it's *fantastic*," he says.) There's this whole scene set to Asia's Heat of the Moment that's basically a slash songvid. (No, really, I'm not making this up. RM even agrees.)(Because yes, I've made him watch vids.)

What I'm saying is, go see this movie.
