Dec. 29th, 2005 01:27 pmYesterday RM and I went to see The Family Stone. I got ALL caught up in it -- for starters, I think I overidentified with Sarah Jessica Parker's character (whose most irritating quality was that she WOULD NOT STOP talking. Nope, no resemblance there AT ALL). For whatever the reason, there was more than one scene that made me veer back and forth between laughter and tears. The entire (huge) cast did a great job, too. In some ways it's a predictable family holiday movie, but then other scenes struck me as really, genuinely brave.
The plot twists were -- well, foreshadowed is too mild a word; so is telegraphed. I'd have to say it was like someone in a megaphone wandered in to announce upcoming events. But that's OK, because there are scenes I think would not have been nearly as good if I hadn't known what was coming up -- either because knowing what would happen added depth, or because it simply would have been too squirmingly embarrassing to watch if I hadn't had an idea what was to come (because, for me at least, this was the movie of squirmingly embarrasing scenes).
Best line of the movie, delivered by Luke Wilson: "You have a freak flag, you just don't fly it."
