Happy New Year everyone!!!

(A day late -- like I'm usually so prompt.)

Watched Mean Girls last night. There were a couple parts that I almost couldn't watch, but in the end I liked it. (It reminded me a bit of "Never Been Kissed," except better, not least because I was always a little weirded out by the teacher-student flirting in the latter.) Fun fact, the woman who wrote the book ("Queen Bees and Wannabes") that inspired Tina Fey to write Mean Girls did a lot of research at my high school. It seemed plenty cliquish and mean-spirited and fighting-tooth-and-nail-for-social-acceptance back when I was there, but there were things in Mean Girls that made us look like rank amateurs, which I guess is something to be thankful for.

Flipping channels this morning I watched part of Dreamcatchers (which I've seen before, in the theater) and was reminded agan how good Stephen King is at pushing weird atavistic buttons. Consider for a moment the shit weasel, a slimy critter that busts out of one's rectum (after considerable abdominal distress), and whose business end could teach Freud something about vaginae dentatae. There's even a scene in which a guy is peeing and the shit weasel lunges for his genitals. I don't even have external parts, and I get how that is just fundamentally SCARY (to anyone, but maybe especially males). I don't know of any director with quite that gift trying to push *women's* buttons ... David Cronenberg, maybe, but he's not a storyteller the way King is.
