I just read that New Line is planning to film Phillip Pullman's *His Dark Materials* trilogy. I have mixed feelings about this. I *love* the trilogy, and I certainly feel like there's enough cool stuff in there to make a great film, but the themes are so heavy, and so inextricably linked with the plot. I'm not sure the movie-going public is ready for Pullman's ideas, but I don't know how you could excise them without gutting the story. Are that many parents ready to take their kids to a movie where God is the villain and Eve and the snake are our saviors?
(If this film ever does get made, the fundamentalist reviews should be very .. colorful.)
