I read Emma Bull's War for the Oaks, and Oh. Holy. Cow.

So the heroine is this human woman who fronts a band in Minneapolis, but then this attractive male phouka (a representative from the fairies, except they don't like to be called that) shows up and tells her she's been selected to be THE mortal whose presence is required at some fairy civil war. And she and the phouka wear a variety of stylish outfits (every one of which is described in great detail), and the band plays a number of cool songs (including many '80s new wave hits), as well as some clever originals (whose lyrics are included so we can appreciate how deep they are). And because this woman is a musician in Minneapolis, Prince looms large in her life, so naturally the phouka has curls that spill onto his forehead and a tendency to wear high-heeled boots and skinny pants with brocade jackets and shirts with lots of lace at the collar. And at one point the fairies call a truce and have a big party and she and her band play "Safety Dance" and all the fairies dance around them. I realize it was written in 1987, but there's only so much slack I can cut before the rope runs out.

In other non-news, Medium continues to be a fun show. (Except, is it me, or is the opening theme music *completely* ripped off from the X-Files?) Four days away from my job made for a rude awakening this morning -- even ruder because I had to attend a 9 AM meeting of the bigwigs; I actually dreamed I was late to the meeting. You'd think my subconscious could come up with something more interesting.
