Making up for lost time …
Christmas Eve we received, among other gifts, a DVD of the long-lost Star Wars Holiday Special (some truly dedicated friends located a bootleg cassette on e-Bay and then converted it). It's AMAZING -- in addition to the entire main cast from the film, guest stars include Art Carney, Diahann Carroll, and Bea Arthur (who sings a number in the cantina), and the first 15 minutes are in wookie, with no subtitles. The effect is only heightened by the nth-generation-copy-blurriness -- worse than any Pros vid I've ever seen.
Christmas Day I finally got to see my mysterious gift from CGU. See, he went shopping on Tuesday, and then on the way home told me not to go into his room, and then 10 minutes later added, "and if there's a funny smell in the house, don’t say anything." Sure enough, there's a paint-y, glue-y. solvent-y kind of smell in the house. That night, while I was watching House (mmmm, love House), he wandered around a bit and then asked, very casually, "Just out of curiosity, do we have any glue?" So I told him where the glue might be, and he wandered around a bit more, and then he said, "I'm gonna go hang out upstairs for a while." And then I heard thunking noises. By Christmas morning I was *dying* of curiosity.
Now you need to know that whenever I'm going on a trip without him (like for work or to a slash con), I cut out a bunch of paper hearts, at least one for every night I'll be away, and write little messages on them, and hide them around the house. So he's been saving these up -- there are probably a couple dozen -- and he bought a canvas and painted it and then mounted these hearts all over it, and that was my gift. How cute is he? He pretends to be macho, but he's a big sap.
Meanwhile, it's only six more days until Deadwood is back -- January 3 HBO begins rebroadcasting the first season, two eps at a time. And Lost will be back January 5th!
